Book Review: The Cholesterol Myths by Uffe Ravnskov, MD, PhD

May 5, 2008 by Good Samaritan

My friend Jackie chanced upon Dr. Ravnskov’s book on sale at National Bookstore.  Wow, marked down from P 1,445 to P 75 only.

I’ve heard read about the Cholesterol Myths myself.  I’ve known about this for more than a year now so you know where this review is coming from.  For 4 months now I’ve been on a raw paleolithic diet.  First majority fruitarian, but gradually upping my raw and cooked animal foods intake.  The proportion of which I am trying to achieve is the Homo Optimus Diet proportion of 1 part protein, 2.5 to 3.5 parts fat and 0.8 parts carbohydrates.

For those who still don’t know, I am a hobby healer and diet is one of the tools for healing.  I have written several pieces in this blog that diseased people are good fats deficient.  And that introducing good fats to their diet in the form of supplements like Oleia or Lyprinol is enough to cure them of their symptoms.

But why buy supplements when you can just eat delicious, satisfying fat?  This is what paleolithic dieting teaches, eating saturated fats and cholesterol laden foods is natural.  All those cholesterol or that fat makes you fat, or that fat gives you coronary heart disease is just plain false.

I answer those who ask that coronary heart disease is a vitamin c deficiency problem.  And raw fats, and raw internal organs give plenty, plenty of vitamin c.

Back to the book.  This book is a scholarly work.  It questions the studies made, it questions the conclusions made, it highlights that majority of the studies show that there is no connection between increased cholesterol or fat consumption and the so called heart disease problems.

The book is exciting for those who have access to the studies being mentioned.  It is exciting for those who have the time to read all the studies.

Personally, I am a hobby healer so I merely self experiment and learn from the efforts of fellow self experimenter hobby healers.

I wasn’t too excited while reading the book, maybe because I already have my own judgements and already eat a good proportion of fats in my diet.

For my friends and family, maybe reading this book will allay your fears about fat.

Grab yourself a copy of the Cholesterol Myths: Exposing the fallacy that saturated fat and cholesterol cause heart disease.

Eat fat (PALEOLITHIC FATS such as coconut meat, fish fat, land animal fat, virgin olive oil fat; not cooking oils, not trans fats), slim down, be healthy, wealthy and wise.

Raw Paleolithic Forum launched. Come and join.

I’ve been subscribed to the rawpaleodiet@yahoogroups.com yahoo groups for a few months now.  They decided to launch a website forum.  Here is the announcement:

Some of our members have suggested starting a new rawpaleodiet PHPBB
board/forum as it contained a number of advantages that the Yahoo
groups forums lacked. Here’s the link for those who might be interested
in joining it:-

Of course I’m joining.  Count me in.

What is raw paleolithic dieting?  Raw paleolithic dieting is the diet of our ancestors, before fire, before cooking.  Cooking has been in existence for at least 100,000 years.  But is it optimal for people to eat cooked food?  Probably not.

Fresh Raw Goat Kidneys taste great!

May 2, 2008 by Good Samaritan

Last night before dinner I passed by Farmer’s Market to buy some goat kidneys my 6 year old boy has been requesting for quite some time. I was lucky to chance upon the goat seller that did have quite a lot of it. I got more than 1 kilo of goat kidneys at only P 60 / kilo. How cheap!

Back at home we prepared the grill so that the kidneys could be heated for a couple of seconds for the germs and for my wife’s sanity as this was our children’s dinner. She’d rather have none of it.

While slicing up the kidneys thinly I had the chance to eat them raw. Goat kidneys were very tender. I just removed the coating on the kidneys and bite and hardly need to chew. But chewing brings out the flavor. Very good! Taste like nothing I’ve ever tasted, tastes like goat kidney. I must tell you that when I eat raw animal foods I use zero condiments.

Now I know why my boy has been requesting goat kidneys, they taste great.

Goat kidneys actually tasted better fully raw than when seared / heated.

I had a great dinner last night. Along with the goat kidneys I got a small slice of goat liver. And I added a few strips of prime raw live yellowish beef fat. I was stuffed but happy.

My 83 year old grandmother was with us for dinner and I gave her some fully grilled kidneys and liver which she ate and enjoyed. We did not tell her it was goat. I did not do the cooking since my standards of cooking / heating have changed so much.

My wife grilled some of my prime tender beef to well done and I just tasted it, it was awful. My taste buds are adjusting.

Medicinal uses of raw kidneys?  Some healers say like heals like so if you have kidney problems, eat kidneys.  If you have liver problems such as cancer, eat liver.  Raw is key.

Gaining weight on a mostly raw paleolithic diet

April 29, 2008 by Good Samaritan

It is almost the end of April 2008.

Last night my wife said, “you are so thin I can see your veins through your hands.”  Hmmm…. another wise crack at my raw food diet huh?  Those wise cracks would be true if I had stuck to a fruitarian diet but I did not.

Remember I began my raw paleolithic diet beginning January 2008?  Beginning with the Wai Diet?  Adding raw fish and raw egg yolks?

By March 2008 I added many more kinds of raw sea food, roasted fatty pork, raw beef, raw goat skin in vinegar and soups of goat innards.  Trying hard to emulate the Homo Optimus Diet with 1 part protein, 3 parts fat, 0.8 parts carbs in the form of fruit.

I gather that since my fruit is mostly coconut, that is more fat than carbs.  The high carb fruits would be mangoes and bananas, not much else is high carb.

I don’t eat vegetables.  Fruits taste so much better.

I have not figured out yet how to get 3 parts fat on my diet yet, I must add more coconut milk (gata) to my regimen.

So back to my wife’s comment that I was thin?  Oh yeah?  I went straight for the digital weighing scale.  Weighed 3 times to get a good average.  I am 120 pounds on April 28, 2008. That means I gained 8 lean pounds since January.  That is 2 pounds per month.  I am meeting my goal.  Hooray for me.  And I gained 8 pounds while maintaining a 29 inch waist line.

My goal is 130 pounds, so that is an easy 5 months away.  There is no rush.  Just like when I was losing weight when I was overweight, I merely targetted 2 pounds per month.

I must sign up with a gym soon.

Parasite cleansing / deworming started April 25 on my 6 year old boy

April 29, 2008 by Good Samaritan

I have an extra bottle of Barefoot Herbalist MH’s dewormer and after finishing last month on myself and my 4 year old boy, it was time for my 6 year old to have him dewormed.  He enjoys the sipping… we call the dewormer, sip don’t gulp, as barefoot instructed.

We began deworming April 25, 2008.  This post is my marker so I know when my son does his 30 days of deworming and finishes.

My 3 year old girl wants to be dewormed too.  I told her, “next year when you are 4 years old.”

Dosage for my 6 year old is 1/2 teaspoon dewormer in 1/4 cup of water.  Sip, don’t gulp.  2 times per day.  Once in the morning and once at night.

This boy reports from time to time seeing live worms in his stool.  But I have never seen them.  I reminded him that the next time he sees worms, please call me so I can see them first hand.

Why deworm my kids?  Why not?  Parasites are a prime cause of illnesses.  Once they have attached themselves, you need to kick them out.

As Barefoot says, before giving any herbs to your children, test it on yourself first.

Raw beef eating children enjoy tender top round cut for health

April 29, 2008 by Good Samaritan

Since January 2008 I’ve been on a raw paleolithic diet.  From a raw fruitarian diet in December 2007, then switching to a somewhat Wai Diet on January 2008 with the addition of raw fish and raw egg yolks.  Then around march I wanted to expand my taste buds to land animals, beginning with raw beef.

Raw beef in Manila is great.  It is freshly slaughtered beginning 11 pm at night, then sold to you fresh in the morning.  The affordable popular cuts are top round and sirloin.

I promised my kids this morning we would have beef steak this morning.  I ran into some server problems this morning and was eventually fixed.  I came home late around 12:30pm and the children had already had a light lunch.  They said they were reserving their tummies for the beef steak I promised them.  So I had to fulfill my promise and we went out to the market searching for fresh beef.

Not much luck finding fatty beef.  Raw Paleolithic style eating needs raw fats.  I went deep into uncharted stalls and found a nice 1 kilo worth of top quality top round cut beef with some good fat on it.

We went home and had the cook prepare the grill.  No need to wash the beef.  Just lay it on the hot grill for some 10 seconds, flip and lay again for 10 seconds then serve.  Ah, very fast, very convenient.

The kids devoured half a kilo of seared beef in a short few minutes.  My 6 year old boy requested for the raw beef.  He savored the raw slice.  He said he likes the raw beef more because it was oh so tender, very easy on is small teeth and jaws.

This evening was the left over 1/2 kilo of raw beef for my dinner.  The kids already ate some dinner but still swarmed on me as I was about to have my dinner.  They were much happier this time the tender top round cut was being eaten bloody raw.  My little girl even used the little pool of blood for sauce.

My camera was available and before the little carnivores could finish off the whole meal we snapped a couple of happy photos.  So much happiness, so much enthusiasm.  My 4 year old second boy exlcaimed, “truly delicious and juicy!”

Raw beef is a true food.  Children with uncorrupted taste buds swear raw beef is better than seared beef.  Natural hygiene principles apply to fresh raw beef.

I plan to pump these kids with more raw animal food choices.  Just this afternoon I bought a new batch of organic raw chicken eggs and already my 6 year old had one as part of his afternoon snack.

I am on a roll with this crusade for better kid nutrition.  I promise to buy goat innards next, liver and kidneys.  My 6 year old just loves goat kidneys.  We will be searing them.

Below are photos of my kids enjoying this meal.  Note the absence of fat; we already ate all the fat during lunch time.

My Raw Oysters Experiment, the results are in, immediately!

April 25, 2008 by Good Samaritan

Today I experimented with raw oysters. I bought 2 kilos of large oysters at the Marikina market. I had 1 kilo for lunch and 1 kilo for dinner. Of course when you open them up, they are just half a bowl full each time. Pretty cheap, 40 pesos per kilo. The market man said they never run out of oysters as they came from their own farm in Cavite. Buy local. That’s the way to go.

My cook just poured hot water on the oysters, opened them up, dipped them in organic coconut vinegar to hopefully clean them.

Around 9pm I knew I was in trouble. I felt tell tale signs of poisoning. I knew I had to poop. Early in the evening I took 6 capsules of Barefoot Herbalist MH’s Lower Bowel Balance capsules to assure me of a poop. The pain in my intestines came around 10:30 pm. Finally after some solid poops, the loose bowel movement came… and came… and came… until I felt it useless to keep putting on my boxer shorts, I just kept it off.

I was thinking of the bacteria I had read about that naturally lived within the oysters. So I took 1 full dropper of Barefoot Herbalist MH’s experimental tree iodine. Taking that made me feel better. And a few minutes later, what I was waiting for was the stomach reflex to pump out any toxins left in my stomach. I puked really strong until my abdominal muscles hurt. Not much puke though. But enough for the pukey feelings to subside.

I was weak, but very much lucid. I woke up my wife and requested her to ask the maids to open a coconut for me. If I weren’t so weak and dehydrated I would have opened the coconut myself. Ah, the coconut hydrated and refreshed me, diluted the toxins, whatever they were.

Cavite farmed oysters were bad today, it is April. Was this what they call Red Tide? Or was this just about polluted waters?

What I do know for sure is my foolish confidence in my new raw paleolithic body and health knowledge. I’m experimenting trying to expand my menu. Oysters, as are green mussels, are definitely off my shopping list.

It is 12:20 am as I write this. My puke was just around 12am. Fast recovery huh?
