Paleo Diet Newsletter: Potatoes and Autoimmune Disease

June 13, 2010 by Good Samaritan

Dr. Loren Cordain released this information about potatoes being part of the nightshade family and causing autoimmune diseases. Do you have an autoimmune disease? Maybe it is time you stopped eating potatoes.

This is not new info for me, we stopped eating potatoes some 4 years ago. The full text is posted at Raw Paleo Forum

Nightshade is the common name for flowering plants belonging to the botanical family Solanaceae, which contain more than 75 genera and 2,000 species. Some notorious non-edible nightshades include tobacco, petunias, jimson weed, mandrake, and deadly nightshade. The family comprises well known food plants such as potatoes, tomatoes, green peppers, chili peppers, eggplants and tomatillos. Note that chili peppers include all varieties of peppers from the genus Capsicum, including bell peppers, jalapeno, wax, cayenne, habanero, Anaheim, Thai, Tabasco, cherry, pepperoncini and Serrano among others. Chili peppers are commonly consumed as dried powders such as paprika, chili powder and cayenne, and are near universal ingredients in hot sauces, Tabasco sauces, and salsas.

Now on to potatoes:

Let’s first examine potatoes. Potatoes generally maintain one of the highest glycemic index and load values of any food3-6. Regular consumption of high glycemic index carbohydrates may promote obesity and diseases of insulin resistance, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, abnormal blood lipids, gout, acne, polycystic ovary syndrome, epithelial cell cancers (breast, colon and prostate), acanthosis nigricans (a skin disease), and male vertex balding7. Consequently in both of my books I do not recommend that potatoes be included as a regular component of Paleo Diets. Additionally, as you can see from Table 1, most of the potatoes consumed in the U.S. are highly processed in the form of french fries, mashed potatoes, dehydrated potato products, and potato chips. Processed potato foods typically are made with multiple additives (salt, vegetable oils, trans fats, refined sugars, dairy products, cereal grains, preservatives, and other food additives) that may adversely affect health in a variety of ways.

An additional nutritional property of potatoes that is rarely considered in regard to human health is their saponin content. Saponins derive their name from their ability to form “soap” like foams when mixed with water. Chemically, saponins are classified as either steroid glycosides or triterpenoid glycosides. A glycoside is any of a group of organic compounds occurring abundantly in plants that yield a sugar and one or more non-sugar substances upon hydrolysis (chemical decomposition in which a compound is split into other compounds by reacting with water). Steroid glycosides are commonly called glycoalkaloids.

Both categories of saponins are widely distributed throughout the plant kingdom including many cultivated crops. The primary function of saponins is to protect the plant from microbial and insect attack by dissolving cell membranes of these potential predators8. In mammals, including humans who consume saponin containing plants, these substances frequently create pores in the gut lining, thereby increasing intestinal permeability8-10. If they enter the bloodstream in sufficient concentrations, they cause hemolysis (destruction of the cell membrane) of red blood cells8-10.

Figure 1 shows how saponins disrupt cell membranes which may lead to a leaky gut. Saponins first bind cholesterol molecules in intestinal cell membranes due to the affinity of a saponin component (the aglycone moiety) for the membrane sterol (cholesterol)9. In the series of steps that follows, you can see how saponins cause portions of the cell membrane to buckle and eventually break free, forming a pore or a hole in the membrane.

Figure 1. The proposed mechanism by which dietary saponins may elicit pores in intestinal cells leading to a “leaky gut” (adapted from 9).

Potatoes contain two glycoalkaloid saponins: ?-chaconine and ?-solanine which may adversely affect intestinal permeability and aggravate inflammatory bowel disease11, 12. Even in normal healthy adults, a meal of mashed potatoes results in the rapid appearance of both ?-chaconine and ?-solanine in the bloodstream13. The toxicity of these two glycoalkaloids is dose dependent – meaning that the greater the concentration in the bloodstream, the greater is their toxic effect. At least 12 separate cases of human poisoning from potato consumption, involving nearly 2000 people and 30 fatalities have been recorded10. Potato saponins can be lethally toxic once in the bloodstream in sufficient concentrations because these glycoalkaloids inhibit a key enzyme (acetyl cholinesterase) required for the synthesis of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter required for nerve impulse conduction10. The concentration of both ?-chaconine and ?-solanine in a variety of potato foods are listed in Table 3. Note that the highest concentrations of these toxic glycoalkaloids appear in potato foods containing the skins.

Table 3. Concentrations (mg/kg) of total glycoalkaloids (?-chaconine + ?-solanine) in a variety of potato foods (adapted from 10).

Food Item ?-chaconine + ?-solanine (mg/kg)
Fried skins 567-1450
Chips with skins 95 – 720
Chips (US potatoes) 23 – 180
Frozen baked potatoes 80 – 123
Frozen skins 65 – 121
Baked potato w/jacket 99 – 113
Dehydrated potato flour 65 – 75
Boiled peeled potato 27 – 42
Canned whole new potatoes 24 – 34
Frozen fried potato 4 – 31
Frozen French fries 2 – 29
Dehydrated potato flakes 15 – 23
French fries 0.4 – 8
Frozen mashed potatoes 2 – 5
Canned peeled potato 1 – 2

So the next logical question arises: Should we be eating a food that contains two known toxins which rapidly enter the bloodstream, increase intestinal permeability and potentially impair the nervous system?

In the opinion of these authors: “. . . if the potato were to be introduced today as a novel food it is likely that its use would not be approved because of the presence of these toxic compounds.” 11

Other researchers state: “Available information suggest that the susceptibility of humans to glycoalkaloids poisoning is both high and very variable: oral doses in the range 1 – 5 mg/kg body weight are marginally to severely toxic to humans whereas 3 – 6 mg/kg body weight can be lethal. The narrow margin between toxicity and lethality is obviously of concern. Although serious glycoalkaloid poisoning of humans is rare, there is a widely held suspicion that mild poisoning is more prevalent than supposed.” 10

The commonly accepted safe limit for total (?-chaconine + ?-solanine) in potato foods is 200 mg/kg, a level proposed more than 70 years ago, whereas more recent evidence suggests this level should be lowered to 60 – 70 mg/kg10. If you take a look at Table 2 you can see that many potato food products exceed this recommendation.

I believe that far more troubling than the potential toxicity of potato glycoalkaloids is their potential to increase intestinal permeability over the course of a lifetime, most particularly in people with diseases of chronic inflammation (cancer, autoimmune disease, cardiovascular disease and diseases of insulin resistance). A leaky gut has been recently proposed to be a universal initiating trigger for autoimmune diseases14 – a conclusion that I agree with15, as well as promoting cardiovascular disease16, 17 and diseases of insulin resistance18. When the gut becomes “leaky” it is not a good thing, as the intestinal contents may then have access to the immune system which in turn becomes activated thereby causing a chronic low level systemic inflammation known as endotoxemia16 – 18. In particular a component of the cell walls of gut gram negative bacteria called lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is highly inflammatory. Any LPS which gets past the gut barrier is immediately engulfed by two types of immune system cells (macrophages and dendritic cells). Once engulfed by these immune cells, LPS binds to a receptor (toll-like receptor-4) on these cells causing a cascade of effects leading to increases in blood concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines (localized hormones) including interferon gamma (INF-?),interleukin 1 (IL-1), IL-6, IL-8 and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-?)16, 19. Two recent human studies have shown that high potato diets increase the blood inflammatory marker IL-620, 21. Without chronic low level systemic inflammation, it is unlikely that few of the classic diseases of civilization (cancer, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases and diseases of insulin resistance) would have an opportunity to take hold and wreak their fatal effects.

A final note on potatoes – to add insult to injury, this commonly consumed food is a major source of dietary lectins. On average potatoes contain 65 mg of potato lectin per kilogram. As is the case with most lectins, they have been poorly studied in humans, so we really don’t have conclusive information how potato lectin may impact human health. However, preliminary tissue studies indicate that potato lectin resists degradation by gut enzymes, bypasses the cell wall barriers and can then bind various tissues22, 23. Potato lectins have been found to irritate the immune system and produce symptoms of food hypersensitivity in allergenic and non-allergenic patients24. Just say “no” to potatoes!!

Our 5 year old girl had a molar extraction at the Biological Dentist

June 9, 2010 by Good Samaritan

Yesterday afternoon was the day. After having some tooth and gum infection, and quenching the infection with very low carbohydrate, high fat diet with extra virgin olive oil pulling, our girl had her molar extracted yesterday. It was a simple 15 minute extraction with Dr. Gaba. Probably local anasthesia plus Reiki and our 5 year old daughter was a calm kid at every dental appointment.

We chose this method of extraction rather than the first offered to us with sedation. Where sedation involves an anesthesiologist with full body anasthesia, which to our mind was adding more danger, more complications to what should be a simple extraction. In fact, if this second dentist wanted the same sedation I was prepared to put my girl fully on raw paleo diet full time and wait for the darn tooth to fall off.

There is a 2nd molar that needs attention as well. It was not touched at this appointment maybe next week.

In the meantime, very low carb diet continues. I’ve got my raw liver ready and waiting in the ref. 🙂

Biological Dentist Visit for our 5 Year old girl

June 6, 2010 by Good Samaritan

Yesterday Saturday we got a 3 pm with the biological dentist Dra. Herminia Chavez at the Queen Mary Holistic Center in Medical Plaza in Pasig City for our 5 year old girl with painful tooth decay. Lucky for us, it was Dra. Chavez herself who initially saw her. Her initial diagnosis and opinion is there were some 3 teeth needing fillings and 2 molars needed extraction. The initial recommendation was for sedation with an anesthesiologist but we would need clearance from our pediatrician, our anthroposophic doctor.

Dra. Chavez had to go so her fellow dental staff continued. They took pictures and took a panoramic x-ray. Then Dra. Chavez called in and thought that maybe we should try and see if our child has any allergies with the anesthesia by injecting some in her arm… a skin test. Then go home and schedule for extraction next time. She says it seems the child is well behaved and they may be able to do an extraction without sedation.

So we finally had the panoramic x-ray results. It showed the decays reached the roots of those 2 molars candidates for extraction. In fact these 2 molars had previous fillings which dropped out. In fact last Wednesday our child was complaining of tooth pain. I saw she had a puss filled pimple on her upper left gum above her decayed molar. I put clove oil daily. And had her oil pull with extra virgin olive oil daily. Yesterday Saturday with the bio-dentist, you can see in the picture below that the pus filled pimple had drained / gone but there is still some small level pain being felt by our daughter.

We bought a big bottle of colloidal silver. I’m still debating with myself if I should give that as a gargle wash. Or maybe just use Quantum Mineral Drops as a gargle wash. Extra Virgin Olive Oil is working well. I’m not too keen on colloidal silver unless it’s an emergency. We will see.

So what is the plan? My wife is used to the other biological dentist Dr. Gaba and has seen him work with this same child before. Maybe she would be more psyched up in his hands. I had my root canaled tooth extracted here with Dr. Chavez. I’d guess it’s a safe bet to ask the pediatrician her opinion on the matter as well.

So while we wait, our child will be on rawish paleo diet / cure tooth decay protocol. It works, so let’s just follow through, let’s not yoyo this time. Last night I bought live clams and had a soup with that. I have live oysters for today. There’s more raw beef in the refrigerator. And we have raw uni / sea urchin. I also got raw blue marlin sashimi.

Enjoy the pictures below. It was interesting for me to see for the first time how children’s permanent teeth are all lined up getting ready to erupt in the next few years.

Tooth Decay Problems Again for our 5 year old Girl

June 4, 2010 by Good Samaritan

Our 5 year old girl is having tooth decay problems again. 3 locations this time. The old filling had fallen off. And an infection is again inside. My wife wants a better dentist this time. But my wife will only be available Saturday to take our girl to Dr. Gaba. So yesterday and today Friday she just has to muddle through and try to survive.

Our girl is carb sensitive. She must be on high fat, low carb. She must be on high fat raw paleo diet. Rawish meat will have to do. So oven baking rare beef will have to do. Plus some vegetables. Maybe juiced kamote tops as well.

Seems we have to be strict with her. Unlike her siblings, she should eat no rice and no sweet fruit. The only fruit that will do will be coconut meat, avocados and some durian.

Cure tooth decay protocol will be applied. Time to get more oysters, liver and some bone marrow (which is expensive).

Stem Cell Therapy will not Give you Permanent Cancer Cure – Wisen Up

June 2, 2010 by Good Samaritan

Stem Cell therapy is the latest promised western medical “hope” for cancer relief. Sure it works at first with all the promised never never land. But if you still continue living in the same rotten western medical health paradigms and Standard Urban Diet paradigms then you as hell have a 100% chance of being sick again.

You continue to take umpteen drugs for this and that? That’s not “cured”, that’s a disaster. After a few measly months you are sick again? In pain? That’s not “cured”, that’s a waste. To be cured is to confidently live your life that YOU KNOW what real health is all about and it works and everyone can see that you are healthier than you once were.

Just heard of a grandmother who had stem cell therapy… she got well for a time but she’s sick again. She’s undergoing bone marrow transplant… again. And she is in horrible cancer pain. Will somebody please give her a coffee enema??!!!

If you go on living the paradigms of standard urban diet and western medicine fallacies then this means you are still headed for the cliff and will fall just like all the other lemmings who bought into this mass suicide. Drugs and SAD diet are no good. You think whole wheat has anything for you? You think whole grains and pasteurized milk do you good? You think a low fat, high fiber diet is beneficial? You think all meat must be cooked? You people are gosh darn INSANE! It’s a sad thing dead men tell no tales. If they did, then all those cancer victims will tell you they ate spaghetti, meatballs, canned tomato sauce and processed cheese, hamburger, french fries, pesticide laden vegetables and pasteurized low fat milk… plus they drowned themselves in artificial vitamins and dozens of drugs… WISEN UP! Is this the age of information or what? You’d think this was the dark ages and hordes believe in superstitious nonsense.

Hello!!!! Everything you see on TV and the mass media about health is UPSIDE DOWN! Wisen up. Turn off your TV. Throw away your mainstream health magazines. There’s too much money at stake in their advertiser sponsored paradigms, they cannot afford to tell you the TRUTH! WISEN UP!

Who to listen to? Listen to the cancer cured. Listen to the really healthy been sick… now healthy and rocking solid. If you are on drugs, if you are FAT, if you are on SAD diet… you are not living optimally, you’re not getting your money’s worth. You should be drug free, sexy, beautiful, full of energy. From sick to fantastic is possible and many have done it. Where can you find some of these people? Check out www.rawpaleoforum.com , it’s where the cured and the healthy hang out.

Healthier Party Food Ideas: Buko Palamig! Sashimi! Raw Veggy sticks!

May 29, 2010 by Good Samaritan

One of my healthy party ideas came to fruition today… TWICE! An entire jug of buko palamig in my son’s lunch time party. An entire jug of buko palamig in our extended family get together for our grandma who recently passed away. Move out softdrinks, move out beer, in this hot summer, everybody bows down to the refreshing power of buko palamig. Let’s get drunk over buko palamig.

What is buko palamig? (direct translation is: coconut cooling drink) It’s coconut juice, big blocks of ice, coconut meat strands plus some sugar to taste. Yeah yeah sugar is bad but you can’t have 100% goodness appeal to all people in a party of mostly standard food eaters. And I halved the amount of sugar they usually put in.

Where to get buko palamig? I got mine from my suki in Marikina Market. I usually buy 20 coconuts at a time. They also sell buko palamig retail. I asked this time to buy the entire jug with contents this time. Pretty cheap huh? Cheap but good!

Then there’s sashimi. Everybody loves sashimi. Fresh raw tuna, raw blue marlin, fresh raw salmon. Yes the salmon is farmed, so it’s not the best but it will have to do… party compromises.

I then got a zester tool which makes fine strands of a giant labanos I bought. A nice condiment for the sashimi. There’s kikkoman fermented and brewed soy sauce, some calamansi and some wasabi for that Japanese feel. Plus wooden disposable chop sticks.

Got some raw carrots and raw cucumber sticks in. It wasn’t so popular, but hey, it’s there.

We health advocates can tip the balance and help friends and relatives by bringing healthy RAW food to every party.

Grandma died of Protein Calorie Malnutrition

May 27, 2010 by Good Samaritan

My grandma died a few days ago. She was 85. She was incredibly weak for a long time. The good doctor who saw her and signed her death certificate wrote one of the major causes of death was Protein Calorie Malnutrition. I searched this on the net and found some pretty good stuff about this ailment which takes many weeks of supportive treatment. Something Vander Gaditano could have easily done, at the right price, with a high rate of success.

This protein calorie malnutrition is something I would like to study in depth. It appears many diseases are caused by malnutrition. It’s what you eat and what you absorb.

This sounds like what my grandma endured:

Marasmus is defined simply as chronic deprivation of energy needed to maintain body weight. Its extreme form is characterized by severe weight loss and cachexia.1 Marasmus is further characterized by subnormal body temperature, decreased pulse and metabolic rate, loss of skin turgor, constipation, and starvation diarrhea, consisting of frequent, small, mucus-containing stools

and

Treatment

Individuals treated for protein-energy malnutrition are at risk for refeeding syndrome, in which hypophosphatemia, hypokalemia, and hypomagnesemia may lead to disturbances in the cardiac, neurologic, gastrointestinal, respiratory, hematologic, skeletal, and endocrine systems. Guidelines have been developed to help prevent these complications and to establish a transition to normalcy. Treatment consists of 2 phases: stabilization and rehabilitation.

The initial (stabilization) phase proceeds from days 1 through 7. It consists of treatment and prevention of hypoglycemia, hypothermia, dehydration, and infection; correction of electrolyte imbalance and micronutrient deficiencies; and a cautious feeding regimen.

A rehabilitation phase proceeds from weeks 2 through 6. It consists of achievement of catch-up growth; provision of sensory stimulation and emotional support; and preparation for follow-up after recovery.

These initial 2 steps are followed by protocols for the treatment of shock and anemia; management of associated conditions; and guidelines for individuals who fail to respond.
