Healthier Party Food Ideas: Buko Palamig! Sashimi! Raw Veggy sticks!

May 29, 2010 by Good Samaritan

One of my healthy party ideas came to fruition today… TWICE! An entire jug of buko palamig in my son’s lunch time party. An entire jug of buko palamig in our extended family get together for our grandma who recently passed away. Move out softdrinks, move out beer, in this hot summer, everybody bows down to the refreshing power of buko palamig. Let’s get drunk over buko palamig.

What is buko palamig? (direct translation is: coconut cooling drink) It’s coconut juice, big blocks of ice, coconut meat strands plus some sugar to taste. Yeah yeah sugar is bad but you can’t have 100% goodness appeal to all people in a party of mostly standard food eaters. And I halved the amount of sugar they usually put in.

Where to get buko palamig? I got mine from my suki in Marikina Market. I usually buy 20 coconuts at a time. They also sell buko palamig retail. I asked this time to buy the entire jug with contents this time. Pretty cheap huh? Cheap but good!

Then there’s sashimi. Everybody loves sashimi. Fresh raw tuna, raw blue marlin, fresh raw salmon. Yes the salmon is farmed, so it’s not the best but it will have to do… party compromises.

I then got a zester tool which makes fine strands of a giant labanos I bought. A nice condiment for the sashimi. There’s kikkoman fermented and brewed soy sauce, some calamansi and some wasabi for that Japanese feel. Plus wooden disposable chop sticks.

Got some raw carrots and raw cucumber sticks in. It wasn’t so popular, but hey, it’s there.

We health advocates can tip the balance and help friends and relatives by bringing healthy RAW food to every party.

Grandma died of Protein Calorie Malnutrition

May 27, 2010 by Good Samaritan

My grandma died a few days ago. She was 85. She was incredibly weak for a long time. The good doctor who saw her and signed her death certificate wrote one of the major causes of death was Protein Calorie Malnutrition. I searched this on the net and found some pretty good stuff about this ailment which takes many weeks of supportive treatment. Something Vander Gaditano could have easily done, at the right price, with a high rate of success.

This protein calorie malnutrition is something I would like to study in depth. It appears many diseases are caused by malnutrition. It’s what you eat and what you absorb.

This sounds like what my grandma endured:

Marasmus is defined simply as chronic deprivation of energy needed to maintain body weight. Its extreme form is characterized by severe weight loss and cachexia.1 Marasmus is further characterized by subnormal body temperature, decreased pulse and metabolic rate, loss of skin turgor, constipation, and starvation diarrhea, consisting of frequent, small, mucus-containing stools

and

Treatment

Individuals treated for protein-energy malnutrition are at risk for refeeding syndrome, in which hypophosphatemia, hypokalemia, and hypomagnesemia may lead to disturbances in the cardiac, neurologic, gastrointestinal, respiratory, hematologic, skeletal, and endocrine systems. Guidelines have been developed to help prevent these complications and to establish a transition to normalcy. Treatment consists of 2 phases: stabilization and rehabilitation.

The initial (stabilization) phase proceeds from days 1 through 7. It consists of treatment and prevention of hypoglycemia, hypothermia, dehydration, and infection; correction of electrolyte imbalance and micronutrient deficiencies; and a cautious feeding regimen.

A rehabilitation phase proceeds from weeks 2 through 6. It consists of achievement of catch-up growth; provision of sensory stimulation and emotional support; and preparation for follow-up after recovery.

These initial 2 steps are followed by protocols for the treatment of shock and anemia; management of associated conditions; and guidelines for individuals who fail to respond.

Choosing Plain CT-Scan to avoid the side effects of blood contrasting dyes

May 26, 2010 by Good Samaritan

When our son was hospitalized weeks ago in extreme abdominal pain, we were offered a CT-Scan to see inside his abdomen what was causing the pain. My wife and I knew the dangers of CT-scan dyes and searched the internet for information as to how important those dyes were, what the dangers were, what reported side effects were. Since I do search engine optimizations and I’m an accomplished healer myself, I knew the search words to enter and sometimes which websites to query.

These dyes were coloring dyes. They improved the contrast of the CT-scan. But these dyes were not necessarily necessary. Many people reported side effects due to kidney related damage not being able to fully detox out the chemical dyes. Some people chose plain CT-scans and were able to go about their business. So we chose to write down on the consent form to only a Plain CT-Scan.

What’s more, in the consent form, there was a rider sentence after the ct-scan that in effect said were agreeing to any resulting needed surgical operations afterwards which we cleared up with the head doctor and we proceeded to cancel – cross out the offending statement. We wanted a plain ct-scan, period. We will not be forced to agree on what to do next. There are other ways to cure people without resorting to surgery.

So our son did get the plain CT-scan and the diagnosis turned out to be intussusception. The hospital team of doctors scheduled surgery at 11am the following day, it was our backup plan. But the non-surgical miracle took place at around 11pm to 1am. So when the doctors made their rounds for pre-surgery the following morning, our son was already cured. They verified this via blood tests, x-ray and ultrasound.

We were happy to have chosen to avoid the CT-scan blood dye for our son. We chose not to interfere in his body’s self healing innate abilities. And we were rewarded by his “one for the books” intussusception cure.

As parents who had the ultimate responsibility for our child, we exercised our responsibility every step of the way.

May 24, 2010 by Good Samaritan

In the news today, boxing king Manny Pacquiao taken to the hospital for stomach ailment. They poo poo the news and say it was just his usual acid reflux. Why take acid reflux lightly? It just means the man is constipated. He has some junk he needs to let go off. Take your pick, there are many ways to clear up acid reflux, never to return.

There’s Dr. Tam’s Miracle Tea, the best colon cleanser in town.

There’s always good old castor oil cleansing. Buy a cheap bottle at the drug store and drink when you wake up.

Raw Paleo Diet Meal Presentations by Inger of Germany

May 23, 2010 by Good Samaritan

I have absolutely zero presentation with my raw meat meals. I seem to have gone back in time and gone caveman. At the worst I’m just biting off meat from a chunk, at best it’s cut sashimi style and eaten with chopsticks, well yeah I like my eggs sipped from a hole in the shell because I don’t have to wash any dishes. But when it comes to enticing family members to eat a raw paleo diet, it seems presentation is important and Inger blazes a trail of pictures for the squeamish to try raw meat in their daily diet.

This is beef liver, and tartar. For the tartar I used minced beef, a little bit olive oil (you can leave that out) one tsp onion chopped, caper (kapern), fresh ground black pepper, Dijon mustard (raw) 1 tbsp. and fresh parsley. Just mix all together and enjoy!

This was delicious, Buffalo (the smaller piece) and entrecote(ribeye?) from grassfed beef. Yum.

This is my all raw pemmican, made with marrow. I love this, it is my favorite meal.

Grassfed beef, sliced, with grassfed marrow-pieces, and a nettle. Grassfed beef and marrow tastes like HWC to me..

Linden leaves (tastes very mild and so delicious!), and one piece of aged liver, dried, ground up heart with coconut oil.

Tartar from minced meat and minced halibut 50%/50%. I mixed in a tiny bit chopped onions, a bit more fresh coriander (that gives a really nice taste!) some fresh limejuice and very little seasalt.
On the top “caviar” from wild salmon. The white topping is creme fraiche.. hard to get raw. But you can leave it, for sure.

Carpaccio from halibut, with “caviar” and fresh dill and lemon.

Allowing our son to eat partially cooked meats

May 22, 2010 by Good Samaritan

It’s been 2 days since the last dose of the antibiotic Flagyl. Today we allowed some partially cooked meat to our 8 year old boy who if you remember has recovered from intussusception. He did not have surgery. He instead got well by a “miracle” which was medically verified by x-ray, ultrasound and blood tests. It is the injured intestines that we are wary about and this is why we have to feed him easy to digest foods. Mono meals.

This lunch time I popped into the oven some fatty beef cuts. He had some, not a lot. This evening he will be having some seared salmon in some “teriyaki” home made from scratch sauce. The rest of his meals for the day are egg yolks and coconut juice and coconut meat.

He just pooped a good solid smooth brown poop. No constipation. Took a bath. And now he just told me it’s eating time so we have to sear his salmon.

Update: He ate quite a bit this evening. I am satisfied with his appetite.

Son unhappy with Metronidazole (Flagyl) for his Amoebiasis plus egg yolk liver flush

May 20, 2010 by Good Samaritan

Our 8 year old boy who got a prescription of Flagyl for his amoebiasis is unhappy with his antibiotics. He has been telling this to me and my wife. He says he just poops it out. And he says his appetite is suppressed because of this. He hardly eats anything these past few days.

Maybe his intestines are healing? Maybe it’s just the side effect of Flagyl? The original prescription is for 10 days. But the packaging says 7 days only. Since our son is complaining, we have decided to just cut it down to 7 days. Today is the last day.

The only things we have been able to get him to eat freely is coconut juice and coconut meat, he once ate a good amount of cooked okra. He ate a small amount of rice and ghee one time. He eats a small amount of durian. And one time with me in the office he ate some raw beef. We get him to eat some 2 raw duck egg yolks a day… somewhat forced.

This morning through prodding I got him to do an egg yolk liver flush using 2 raw duck egg yolks, some freshly squeezed calamansi juice and some virgin coconut oil. Had him lie down for 30 minutes on his right side. Afterwards we went to the wet market to have some “buko palamig” – ice cold coconut juice with some sugar, we also bought our 20 coconuts and a watermelon.

Back home our boy had his poop activated and he said he pooped out some nasty stuff. Said it seemed like olive oil left overs? Hmmm… I didn’t give him olive oil in this liver flush… is he talking about that old olive oil enema last week? Whatever… he flushed it down, I never saw it. He said it didn’t look like my old green liver stones.

We are liver flushing him because an ultra sound exam last week showed he had liver stones and sludge in his gall bladder.

This is just day 1 of 4 egg yolk liver flush mornings. We have fresh Palawan duck eggs.

He was being very difficult this morning. Complained I scrambled his egg yolk, I said it just burst, I didn’t scramble it. Found out we ran out of calamansi, didn’t want to come with me in the car, I had my wife wait for me to see that he does not ingest anything else. My wife advertised that the olive oil came from their church… he said he didn’t like olive oil… I said I have virgin coconut oil… so don’t make any more excuses.

Good thing about knowing the principles about liver flushing is that there are many alternatives for picky people.
