Raw Paleolithic Diet Day for my kids accomplished

July 31, 2008 by Good Samaritan

The Raw Paleolithic Diet is the diet humans evolved to optimally live on.  Yesterday was my chance to test how my kids would like a raw paleolithic day and they did love it.

My wife is out of town and took our oldest child with her on her trip.  So I was left with our 4 year old son and 3 year old daughter.

In the morning we had a fruit breakfast with ripe yellow mangoes and coconut juice.

In the mid morning, my daughter and I drove up to the big wet market and bought a good number of fresh raw meats and fresh raw fish.

At home, at around 9:30am my daughter and I ate a good amount of fresh raw sirloin beef with the yellow fat.

At lunch time we had a big raw salad with our dip consisting of extra virgin olive oil, raw green honey and balsamic vinegar.

Mid afternoon snack we had a lot of red water melon.

And in the evening we had fresh raw tuna with calamansi (philippine citrus equivalent to lemon).  The kids wanted more raw beef again so I did give them more.

Before going to sleep at 8:15pm I had them drink some coconut juice.

Raw days can be done, the kids did not get hungry.  I told the kids we were having a raw day and they understood it.  We kicked out rice yesterday.  Rice is a junk food displacing more nutritious food.  Instead of rice my kids ate more raw meat, raw fat, raw fruit and raw veggies.  And they were satisfied.

I think I will sponsor more raw days with them until they get used to the idea.

First Durian of the year 2008

July 29, 2008 by Good Samaritan

Yesterday afternoon my wife brought home a gorgeous Durian.  The first Durian in the house for the 2008 season.  P 100 per kilo.  This one came in at 3 kilos so it was worth 300 pesos.  We opened it up and the whole thing was going in 10 minutes.  You have to understand that I love the smell and taste of durian, and my 3 kids inherited the same love for the smell and taste of durian.

So now I’m thinking, maybe it would be cheaper and more fulfilling for us to purchase a whole crate of durian in Davao city and have it sent by boat the Manila?  Hmmm….  time to call up relatives in the south.

P.S. We were too excited and gobbled up the whole durian forgetting to take a photo of it.

Wild balimbings grow in the mountains of Antipolo

July 29, 2008 by Good Samaritan

I drove up the mountain of Antipolo this Sunday to taste their wildly grown fruit.  I chanced upon wild balimbings.  The tiny kind.  Cute.  Orange color.

They are not as sweet as the big balimbings.  I think these can be used for cooking.  But they are wild and should give us some wild nutrition.  Whatever it is, dig in.

My picture shows balimbings mixed in with some native guavas.

Marang fruit grows in the mountains of Antipolo

July 29, 2008 by Good Samaritan

I drove up the mountains of Antipolo last Sunday to buy my fruits. I was looking for wild mountain fruit. The kind of fruit where the sellers just pick freely. I was rewarded with a set of 3 marangs for 110 pesos. They said they picked it from the surroundings. It was ripe, sweet and yummy.

And I thought these only grew in the Mindanao area. They are usually too expensive in Tiendesitas. But in the provinces I’ve seen this sold so cheap. Whatever. We enjoyed it.

Curing kidney stones with lemons

July 27, 2008 by Good Samaritan

My driver was troubled the whole week.  His wife was ill… again.  This time she was complaining of having a very hard time urinating.  As if there was something stuck inside.

First measure was to give her lots of coconut juice.

Next measure when that wasn’t enough was to drink avocado leaves tea.

Now his wife was peeing but with so much pain inside.

Must be stones.  Sand like kidney stones.

My driver got his wife a lab test at the hospital and that lab test came out negative for kidney stones.

I said, that’s no good, that’s not true, your wife is in pain, that is the only diagnostic that is important.

So I gave him instructions to dissolve kidney stones with the use of lemons.  He asked me, how many lemons?  I told him to go get 100+ lemons.

The formula for curing kidney stones is:

Drink 8 ounces of freshly squeezed lemon juice first, followed with 1 ounce of lemon juice in a big glass of water.  Repeat every 1 hour for a total of 12 hours.

This should dissolve the kidney stones.

My driver is poor and only had money to buy enough lemons for 4 hours, 4 dosages.  Saturday morning they did it anyway.  And be evening his wife was no longer in pain.  Sunday morning was her birthday.  Happy birthday Julie!

Fear Factor dinner with Raw liver, Raw Kidneys and Duck Balut

July 24, 2008 by Good Samaritan

We had a delicious dinner.  I came home around 7pm and brought out my delicious raw goat liver I bought last night.  With the liver were 2 kidneys.  All bloody raw in the tupperware.  I got my shears and started snipping.  All three kids swarmed around me.  My 3 year old girl already tasted a bit of the raw liver this lunch time and knew it was very tasty.  The 2 boys got curious and tasted the raw liver as well.  They all liked the raw liver.

Then the kids got curious with the raw kidneys.  So I snipped at the kidneys and both kidneys were consumed in a flash.  Eventually I got to eat.  And before finishing up I had my wife taste a tiny bit of the raw goat liver.  Ha ha ha, she can’t get over the fact that it’s raw and cringed while chewing on the small succulent piece.

Cringing wife had 3 duck embryos cooked for dinner.  For all you foreigners, this is called balut.  These are 17 day old duck embryos, cooked in boiling water for some 15 minutes.  We were all satisfied with the dinner.  It was just right.  Eating raw makes you full just right, never too much.

I noticed the past few days that I like eating meat only once per day.  So this morning I had fruits.  Then at lunch I had a big salad and celery.  My mid morning snack was coconut juice and meat.  And my mid afternoon snack was ripe indian mangoes.  And this evening the goat liver and kidneys.

Raw goat liver for dinner was absolutely delicious

July 23, 2008 by Good Samaritan

This morning I felt I wanted to go fruitarian the whole day.  But in the evening I felt a change of appetite as I stumbled upon fresh goat liver at Farmers market.  I saw a nice cut of raw sirloin beef and I saw a nice whole raw goat liver.  I bought them both and took them home.

No sense in letting these things in the refrigerator for lunch the next day.  Fresh is fresh and must be eaten now.  So I used my handy shears to cut off a palm sized cut of the raw goat liver and cut them in bite sized pieces.  Side by side I cut the same palm sized portion of sirloin beef which is muscle with some yellow fat.

The contrast in taste was night and day!  Raw goat liver tasted rich, flavorful, excellent.  Contrast this with raw sirloin muscle of beef which tasted bland compared to the goat liver.  Now I’m spoiled.  Now I know why in the history of humans, the chiefs would get the liver as it was the most delicious part and the slaves would get the muscle meat.

I’ve had both cuts before but this is the first time I tried eating them both in the same plate to compare and contrast.  Maybe the liver i got this time was fresher and came from a healthier goat, that could be a reason with this time this raw goat liver tastes absolutely excellent.

What I do know is excellence in taste of raw food means excellence in nutrition.  Let’s keep tasting and let’s keep noting down those excellent sources.
