Review of Belini’s Italian Restaurant menu item appetizer: Carpaccio (raw beef)

November 2, 2009 by Good Samaritan

I was with my in laws going around last Saturday and we checked on our once flooded house. On the way out we found our way to a curious new branch of Belini’s authentic Italian restaurant in Marikina.

So Mr. Belini opened up a branch in Marikina and they just survived the great flash flood last month and they are open for business. We met Daniel Belini the restaurateur and he welcomed us in authentic Italian fashion and Italian accent.

I was curious when I saw in the menu they had beef carpaccio. Alright, this was my chance to eat raw beef the Italian restaurant way. Also a way to get my in laws acquainted to the concept that raw beef is delicious and good for you if it is presented in a pleasing way and a high price tag with foreign ambiance where the eating of raw beef in this manner is expected to be normal and gastronomic.

The carpaccio was served cold thinly sliced like less than 2 millimeters and it was bathed in olive oil with thin slices of some kind of white cheese on top with some sliced capers. Yum yum. Very easily gobbled up by 5 adults. Not filling at all. Hey, it was just the appetizer. The non raw foodists liked the raw beef this way. No apprehensions at all.

Hmmm… maybe next time I will ask the butcher to slice my raw beef this thinly and present my own carpaccio versions at home.

Food presentation seems to mean too much for our women. I’m just a savage caveman who eats with my scissors.

Why drinking tea is an important health practice in times of disasters

October 16, 2009 by Good Samaritan

For a few days now I’ve been sleeping in our abandoned office in Provident Village, Marikina. We are on the 3rd floor so the flood did not reach our office. But the rest of the village including our own house was devastated by the flood including tons and tons of mud as if reclaiming the land as part of the river delta. The mud though was stinky, smelled of poop and garbage.

A few days ago electricity was restored to the office. And luckily I had one of those Smart Bro cellular antenna type internet dsl connections which still worked. The wired Globe DSL is of course dead. So I had electricity and I had internet. Whoopeee. Time to get back and sleep a couple of nights here to finish my server migration.

I was in the middle of server migrations when the flood happened. And with crummy portable cellular usb internet connections, it just wasn’t feasible, effective, nor fast enough, not reliable enough to do my migrations.

Our office water dispenser was still 1/3 full of stagnant water that has been sitting there for more than 2 weeks. Funny my driver just proceeded to drink some of it. Wrong.

Tea is the answer. Tea is just putting some herbal flavor in the boiled water. It’s a nice social habit. Get safe, pure tea. Loose leaf is better. Remember to always drink tea in times of crisis situations. When water is stagnant. When water is stored, it gets bad. Boiling makes the water safe for drinking again. Tea is just for flavor, entertainment.

So all you people in the disaster stricken areas, drink tea. You can’t trust the store water. Boil your water. Drink tea, socialize and be healthy.

Durian everyday is making me gain weight on my raw paleo diet!

September 24, 2009 by Good Samaritan

Wow, it seems durian every single day as my fruit for the past few weeks is making me gain weight. This is a good departure from my plateauing weight status on raw paleo diet.

For many months now I have been stuck in the 121 lbs to 123 lbs weight are around 20.5 BMI while on raw paleo diet. My diet is fruits in season in the morning… raw fatty animal food at lunch and raw fatty animal food at dinner.

This time I’m looking at noticing the bowel movement activating effects of fruits. There are some fruits that prove to activate my bowels prematurely. I can feel the subtle aches inside and flush go my bowels. My theory is that there is something good about those all meat diets some people are on because the bowels are kept “solid” feeling.

Durian is technically a fruit but it does none of that gurgling or activating of my bowels prematurely. My theory is that just to be on durian and meat will keep my stomach quiet for a while. Calm bowels will make for optimum nutrient absorption, thus fattening. I’m concerned that my bowel transit times are TOO FAST … 12 hours or less.

I will be applying this lesson I’ve learned on myself to my own 8 year old boy who needs some fattening up. This week we have agreed that he and I be on a durian and meat only diet.

How to Open Oysters in Pictures and Video

September 13, 2009 by Good Samaritan

Labor of love for my 8 year old boy.  He loves oysters and has not had his fill yet.  Maybe he needs all that zinc.  So I bought live oysters from the market and prepared it all for him this lunch time.  At the same time I took pictures and a short video demonstrating how to open live oysters.

Materials for washing oysters: a pail of water and a brush

The oysters I buy at the wet market are still full of mud. I have to ask next time why they don’t clean them up before they sell them to us.

So you get your muddy live oyster and brush it well while dipping it in the pail of water. Use a pail so you don’t waste running water via a faucet. Save water!

Use the brush on the oyster

The oyster is now clean. Now it is time to open the oyster:

1. Use your knife and chip away at the edge of an oyster exposing its gap, opening.
2. Use your knife and jam it in and twist it to open the oyster.

Clip the oyster edge to be able to expose a gap for the knife to go in

Ta dahh… the oyster is now open and ready to eat! Raw of course. You want that zinc to be bio available don’t you? For the germ phobic, just dip your oyster in some organic vinegar or squeeze a lemon on top.

4 Year Old Girl Gets Lots of Tooth Decay from High Fruit High Rice Diet – Toothbrushing and Flossing ineffective

September 12, 2009 by Good Samaritan

My 4 year old girl had been suffering from pain in her two teeth, one in the left and one on the right.  Tooth decay.  I had put clove oil on her painful teeth as first aid relief.  I badgered my wife to bring her to the biological dentist Dr. Gaba to heal her pain.

This 10am our 4 year old girl had her first dental appointment and had a tooth cavity fixed and filled. She was brave.  No fear.  Dentist was pleased.

This example hammered the points of the Cure Tooth Decay book by Rami Nagel about the real cause of tooth decay.  My wife and I had been debating this issue for quite some time.  My wife is an extreme tooth brusher.  She believes in tooth brushing and flossing… very thoroughly… yet this concept is false.  And just as Rami Nagel wrote in his book, it is sugar spikes, too much carbs from excessive fruits and excessive rice that was the culprit to our 4 year old child’s multiple teeth decaying.

This child of ours eats sweet fruits (rambutan) in the morning for breakfast… but mid morning she eats rice with cooked animal food… then at lunch rice again with cooked animal food… by mid afternoon snack she eats sweet fruits again (rambutan lately)… then dinner there are times she eats soup and rice only.  Talk about carbohydrate overdosing.

Don’t look at me, I’m not the one buying those extremely abundant rambutans… I buy the fatty meats these days… not the fruits.

This child is very very good at tooth brushing and flossing… bzzzzzz… wrong answer to tooth decay… I told you so… and this had to happen only to drive the point across that tooth brushing and flossing does not prevent tooth decay.  Tooth brushing and flossing is cosmetic… not functional.

So finally both my wife and I are on the same page, cut out rice.  We made the 2 younger kids choose… give up rice or give up fruits?  Give up rice.

Clamp down on the sweet fruits! Rambutan is too sweet. When you eat a sweet fruit you pair it with fat like avocado or raw egg yolks so it does not cause tooth decay. The only fruits I buy lately are high vitamin c native guavas and durians.

I have no problems with my 8 year old boy I’m handling now, he has been rice less a few weeks now on the Daddy treatment for his malnutrition.

Good that durians are in season now, it is sweet and fat at the same time, no overeating on this fruit, it fills you up real fast because it is FAT.

A clear path towards paleo diet for all children is in clear view. My wife is now on board.
