Durian Health Benefits: Durian Festival in Calinan

I’m currently visiting the wonderful city of Davao. No joke that the symbol of Davao city is the durian fruit. Durians are littered everywhere in the city. There are literally durians and durians and durians every where you go in the city and in the outskirts. And it is only March 2012. Does Davao city get buried in an avalanche of durians by September 2012? I can’t imagine.

Durian health benefits? For me, durian is one of the most special fruits grown in the Philippines. Durians provide a seemingly heavy amount of nutrition over and above other fruits. Durian makes one satisfied as if one has eaten a meat meal. And if you are seriously seeking to gain weight, eat durian every day!

What do those scientists think about durian? Some websites will claim: lots of minerals, lots of healthy raw carbohydrates, lots of vitamins. Reportedly durian has lots of b-complex vitamins… which explains why you feel like you’ve eaten meat when you eat durian.

And the smell? Nobody in Davao City seems to be complaining. Durian today sells at 40 pesos per kilo whether in Davao City or in Calinan Poblacion up north.

In nearby towns, they celebrate durian festivals. Last year 2011, Tagum City celebrated its Durian festival. This year 2012, today March 1 to 10, 2012, Calinan Poblacion celebrated its 75th anniversary and its 1st Durian Festival!

We were ultra lucky today. We first went to the Philippine Eagle sanctuary in the early afternoon. Then on the way home we had heard about this festival from the durian truckers we bought durian from. And just in time… they were at the closing part of the durian festival and they were giving away and opening free durian for everybody! All you can eat right there on the spot, no take homes. Awesome! Durian tastes better when it’s free!

Since yesterday and today, we are totally pigged out on durian and other fruits. What else is there to do in Davao, right?
